Kicking Off Term Two – Tips for Casual Relief Teachers

As the school gates swing open for Term Two, casual relief teachers (CRTs) across the country are diving back into classrooms with renewed energy and plenty of challenges ahead. Whether you’re an experienced CRT or just starting out, Term Two is a great time to refresh your approach, build on routines, and connect with students in meaningful ways.

Here are some handy tips to help you kick off the term with confidence and ease.

1. Be Early, Be Ready
Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the bell. It gives you time to familiarise yourself with the day’s plan, check out the classroom layout, and introduce yourself to neighbouring staff. A calm start can set the tone for the rest of the day.

2. Pack Your CRT Kit
Having a well-stocked teacher bag can be a lifesaver. Some essentials include:
-A USB with a few emergency lessons and activities
-Stickers or a small reward system
-Whiteboard markers (you’d be surprised how often they’re missing!)
-A whistle or portable timer for outdoor sessions
-Notebook to record your day and interactions

3. Know the School Routine
Every school runs a little differently, so always check the basics:
-Bell times and yard duty roster
-Behaviour management policies
-Emergency procedures

If in doubt, ask a friendly staff member – most are more than happy to help out a fellow educator.

4. Establish Authority with Warmth
As a CRT, building rapport quickly is key. Introduce yourself clearly and confidently. Set expectations early and maintain consistency. A friendly but firm approach helps students feel secure and more likely to stay engaged.

5. Have Back-Up Activities Ready
Sometimes you’ll get a detailed plan, other times… not so much. Always be prepared with a few engaging filler learning tasks.
Think along the lines of:
-Quick writing prompts
-Brain teasers or riddles
-Silent reading challenges
-Art-based tasks (great for winding down the day)
Tailor them to suit a range of year levels and abilities.

6. Reflect and Grow
Keep a log of schools you’ve visited, what worked well, and what didn’t. This helps you improve your practice and track your progress. Some CRTs even keep a running list of schools they love returning to (and those they don’t).

7. Build Positive Connections
Term Two is a good time to start cementing relationships with schools. Leave a quick note for the classroom teacher detailing what was covered and how the day went. A little professional courtesy goes a long way and might land you more regular bookings.

8. Look After Yourself
Relief teaching can be unpredictable and exhausting. Make time for rest, reflect on your successes, and don’t be too hard on yourself if things get a bit chaotic. You’re doing important work, even if it’s just for the day.

Term Two is a fresh start – a great opportunity to reset and step confidently into new classrooms. As a CRT, your flexibility and creativity make you an asset to every school you enter. Stay organised, stay adaptable, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.

Have a great term ahead!
